2018 Conference  -

Electronic Warfare:  Innovation & Evolution in Global Electromagnetic Operations

Background

The electromagnetic environment is changing at an increasing pace, and thus the importance of electronic warfare has also increased, along with the need for EW system adaptability, flexibility, and innovation.  Not only are innovative technologies greatly needed, but the EW Community across defence and engineering itself needs to change conceptually and organizationally to embrace innovative ideas, technologies, and tactics - and at a significantly faster pace.  Innovation is about more than refreshing technology, it is also about evolving culture.

We live in a time of increasing uncertainty on many fronts.  Threats, challenges and, yes, opportunities are increasing.  Technology is accelerating.  The world is undoubtedly changing and in unforeseen ways.  In terms of future warfare, national forces are being re-shaped and re-equipped to face an operational maneuver space that will be complex and connected, but constrained.  It may well be chaotic unless the right, informed choices are made now.  In terms of EW and electromagnetic operations how can we make sense of all of these things, minimise the risks and maximise the benefits?

AOC EW Europe, Lausanne

The AOC’s 23rd European event in Lausanne, Switzerland, will consider the future of EW and EM Operations in the changing light of current and emerging threats, including Hybrid Warfare, Information Operations, the multi-domain battle (MDB), Cyber and Anti Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) where some potential opponents are excelling.  It will consider the possible responses, how thinking and attitudes must change, and examine the new capabilities that will be required across all lines of development, by all services, in all countries in the free world.  The Conference will consist of plenary sessions focusing on operations, defence capability development, and industry inventiveness.  AOC EW Lausanne 2018 will bring together the EW, SIGINT, C4ISR, Cyber EM Activities (CEMA) communities and more.  Speakers will include leaders and operators from the military, government, and academia, S&T and international R&D communities and, crucially industry.  This is an unclassified English language global event focused on EW and EM operations and includes networking, an exhibition with many of the world’s most innovative companies and industries participating, and a world-class conference.  It is not to be missed.

The AOC, or Association of Old Crows, is a not-for-profit advocacy association for individuals and organisations which have common interests in Electronic Warfare (EW), Electromagnetic Spectrum Management Operations, Cyber Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA), Information Operations (IO), and other information related capabilities.  Now in its 54th year, it is based in the US with over 13,000 members and many chapters active around the world, including in Switzerland.  Approximately 20% of AOC members are based outside of the US and international membership is the fastest growing sector.  Benefits of membership include monthly copies of the internationally renowned Journal of Electronic Defense; weekly e-Crows with online updates and breaking news; free access to a wide range of current webinars from leading global experts covering the entire EM environment and AOC Mission Area.  Additionally, it enables participation in an association of like-minded individuals.

Session topics will build on the successful format of previous years and include:

  • Keynote addresses
  • Operational updates and activities
  • National perspectives
  • Defensive and offensive capabilities
  • Technological developments including autonomous vehicles, swarm technologies and countermeasures.
  • Future warfare – capability, integration and interoperability
  • Critical EM lines of development
  • EM operations, information operations, cyber and network enabled capability
  • Industry briefs on new technology, innovations and applications
