EW 2019

Interview with Prof Yu-Jiu Wang

The theme of AOC EW Europe 2018 is 'Innovation and Evolution in Global Electromagnetic Operations' - why are innovation and evolution currently so important in the EM Spectrum?

The complexity and switching speed of semiconductor technologies have leaped 10000 times since 20 years ago. This allows not only unprecedented machine intelligence, but also manipulations of the electromagnetic spectrum in massive scale with sub-picosecond and sub-millimeter accuracy. This opens unlimited possibilities in EW. However, the global electromagnetic operations have utilized only a small fraction of what technologies can offer today. The countries and allies who realize the potentials through innovations and diligent evolutions will excel in the next major conflicts.

How do you feel the EW community has evolved over the past 12 months?

From my Asian background and viewpoints, the conflicts in North Korea and south China sea, the frequent visits of Chinese troops into the west Pacific demand faster development and deployment of latest EW technologies in surrounding countries and their allies. This aggravates the already crowded spectrum in that region. Powerful EW capabilities and diplomatic efforts stop minor conflicts from becoming severe large-scale total war.

What do you think are the particular challenges facing EW capabilities in Europe specifically?

From my limited viewpoints, Europe has not extensively partnered with their trusted Asian allies in semiconductor manufacturing and designs in EW fields. Regardless of political concerns, this can help reduce the overall risks and research-to-deployment schedule of EW weapons significantly. Resources can then better invested in the more valuable battle system and their field programs.

What can delegates expect to take away from your session?

We will give an overview on recent radar fundamental technologies progress, and international state-of-the-art systems. We then predict major trait of EW development trends, and their ultimate physical limitations. We then briefly introduce the efforts made by Taiwan to close the gap between state-of-the-art and the ultimate boundary. We will help the attending delegates picture what is possible now and next, and what does it mean for battlefield in the near future.

Why is AOC EW Europe a must-attend event for those working in the EM domain?

AOC EW is a global and diverse conference, where delegates share their experiences, issues, and expectations. Delegates hear latest updates from different military and technological projects. Lots of networking and conversations make every participant more relevant.
